Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical in London, the 1983 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a muted nose, smudged red berry fruit tinged with iris, yet overall enervated compared to the 1985 and 1988. The palate is medium-bodied but feels a little "pushed," not quite as natural as other vintages with a slightly acetic finish. That all sounds quite negative. It is actually a lot better than many other 1983 red Burgundy wines that I have encountered and yet, I was not taken with it as much as others. Tasted November 2015.
