Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical in London, the 1966 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is a testament to the greatness of this vintage. It has a mature but clear hue with a thin tawny rim. The nose is so elegant and refined, almost understated with hints of Morello, iron piping and just a splash of balsamic. The palate is beautifully defined, detailed and symmetrical that lends it unerring focus and harmony. Yes, compared to the 1964 it is conservative and prefers not to put a foot wrong. What you have is a perfectly formed, mature Pinot Noir whose effortless nature and complexity are almost impossible to convey in words. Tasted November 2015.
