Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical in London, the 1976 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has a decent bouquet of smudged black fruit, iodine and cola, a hint of wild heather in the background. It is showing its age, but you would not dismiss it. The palate is medium-bodied with a little flatness on the entry, the acidity nicely judged in the context of what was a blisteringly hot summer, with an unexpected tinge of Schezhuan pepper on the finish. Not bad, though not the best 1976 red Burgundy that I have tasted recently. Tasted November 2015.
