The 2000 Aurus is firm and a bit compact. It should be drunk up over the next 5-6 years. The Calvario Vertical Tasting : Allende’s Calvario cuvee is typically 90% old-vine Tempranillo and the balance Garnacha and Graciano sourced from the vineyard of the same name planted in 1945. The wine is aged in new French oak for 16 months and bottled without filtration. The 2000 Aurus has a fine, eucalyptus-tinged bouquet with scents of kirsch and dark plum that are lively and well-defined. The palate is sensual and smooth on the opening. This is a more gregarious Aurus (thus far), with a corpulent, spicy, fleshy, meaty finish that is very satisfying. However, it is not quite as sophisticated as the 1999. Drink now-2020. Commencing with the Allende Blanc, I was impressed by how well this ages. Predominantly Viura with a higher percentage of Malvasia in older vintages, it develops a fine waxy texture and almost dried Barsac-like personality.

A rich core of ripe fruit shows blackberry and plum jam flavors, supported by coffee and bitter chocolate notes, in this firm, balanced red. A precursor to the unbelievable 2001 that’s to come, this is still a beauty of a wine. Aromas of raisin, mint and meaty black fruit create a bouquet that’s nearly over the top.
