The 1996 Aurus has a rustic, leathery bouquet that is animally and feral. The palate is medium-bodied with light, slightly disjointed tannins, while the fruit seems to have ebbed away towards the simple finish. Drink now. Commencing with the Allende Blanc, I was impressed by how well this ages. Predominantly Viura with a higher percentage of Malvasia in older vintages, it develops a fine waxy texture and almost dried Barsac-like personality.

This new-wave red is so ripe and rich it's almost sweet, with blueberry, blackberry and chocolate flavors thick over ripe tannins, and there's enough acidity to keep it lively. Not a traditional Rioja, but it's balanced and still young; a sure crowd-pleaser. Drink now through 2005. 450 cases made.??–TM??Region: Spain / Rioja Select to Add
