Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical, the 1989 Chambertin Grand Cru pales against the superior 1985. This is more advanced with leather, crushed rose petals, clove and forest floor scents, the fruit ebbed away over the horizon. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly gritty tannin that convey a masculine Chambertin, one that I suspect has seen better days. It is not a write off by a long way, but it does not have the class of either the 1985 or 1990, and should be consumed in the near future based on this account. Tasted January 2016.
