The positioning of the vines and the age of the deeply furrowed roots surely play a big role toward achieving the balance and pretty intensity offered here. The wine is streamlined and tight, with no loose ends, held firmly together by fresh Nebbiolo acidity and well-managed tannins. There is a lot of power built up in this Terlo fruit, but the wine also reveals austerity and sharp lines. This wine is more about structure than it is fruit, and with an ample 11,266 bottles made, you can put a few of those aside for extra cellar aging.

Compared to the Cannubi cru, the 2015 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is much more structured and rich. At 45 years old, these are the estate's oldest vines at work (the youngest ones are used for the Barolo Ludo), producing a tannic but nicely balanced and approachable Barolo. There are strongly present earth tones in this vintage, such as freshly tilled soil, and as it opens you'll discover more sweet spice and chocolate as well.

The 2014 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi sports broad shoulders and soft texture with dark cherry, licorice, cola and minor accents of rusty nail or wet earth. This wine ages in large oak casks for 30 months and any oak spice or smoke is very subtle and downplayed. Bottle production here is 5,706 units.

This beautifully balanced Barolo opens to a light garnet appearance with dark ruby highlights. The wine is lean and polished in terms of its initial approach, but it does fan out over the palate in silky waves. The bouquet here is classic Nebbiolo with blue flowers, wild berries, light spice and smoke.
