A pure expression of Sangiovese aged in oak for 12 months, the 2015 La Corte is the latest edition of a historic wine first produced in faraway 1904. That makes it more than a century old. The wine is more extracted and thick than your typical Sangiovese, but it shows textbook aromas of wild fruit, blue flower and tilled earth. The wine's presentation and overall character shows a high level of sophistication and nuanced definition. Some 15,000 bottles were made.

The Castello di Querceto 2013 La Corte (100% Sangiovese) is a super dark and extracted wine. Again, the wine seems to defy the physical limitations of the moderately pigmented Sangiovese grape. An inky black appearance is followed by thick aromas of blackberry preserves and candied cherry. The finish is not very long in persistence, but it is overtly powerful in terms of intensity.

Spicy and opulent, the 2012 La Corte is a gorgeous wine. The presentation is deep and rich with shapely aromas of dark fruit, plump cherry and savory spice that find wonderful integration. I enjoyed La Corte very much and can think of very few Sangiovese-based wines that reach this level of intensity. Those dark fruit aromas are followed by soft layers of chocolate and tobacco. The wine is powerful and richly textured in terms of mouthfeel. It will hold steady for the next ten years.

The 2011 La Corte is 100% Sangiovese executed in a dark and savory style. This is a delicious and modern interpretation with soft spice and cherry that are woven together with fine and steady stitch work. Unlike the 2010 vintage that is tighter and sharper in texture, this warm vintage expression feels soft and supple in the mouth. It puts up no resistance as it glides smoothly over the palate. La Corte reveals dense concentration and savory after notes of smoke and crushed mineral. This wine is at the beginning of its long evolution.

The 2010 La Corte is an IGT expression of Sangiovese that comes from a hillside single vineyard near the Castello di Querceto winery in Greve-in-Chianti. La Corte is a brawny and meaty expression of the grape that opens to a dark and penetrating appearance. It follows through with dark cherry and dried plum with sweet spice, cardamon and crushed clove. This is a Sangiovese of great personality and endurance. The tannins are still a bit tight, so I would recommend another few years of bottle aging to give them more time to integrate.
