Here's a wine that has held up beautifully over the years, but still clues you into the heat of the summer. It shows that wines from the scorching 2003 vintage can indeed age. The 2003 La Corte offers big concentration and a bold style with large brush strokes of dried cherry, pressed blackberry, spice, leather and cola. It presents those qualities with forceful determination, yet the wine remains balanced and elegant overall. It never feels overripe or jammy.

This Sangiovese is deeply concentrated, redolent of raw blueberry, simple red fruit, spice, leather and perfumed candle. The sour cherry notes on the finish add a tart, crisp point on the tail end of this wine.——M.L.(4/1/2008)—— 89
