Taken from the estate's ancient cellars and poured from a romantically aged bottle with dust caked on the outside of the glass, this wine was made before the appellation existed and is therefore technically a table wine. The 1962 La Corte was born in what is remembered as a balanced vintage with spring temperatures that were just above average for this era. The summer months were hot and dry. It's amazing to think that the Sangiovese vineyards used in this wine were planted in 1899; they have been replanted twice since then. Equally amazing is the fact that Castello di Querceto was already operating according to a cru or single-vineyard philosophy back then. Tasted six long decades later, the wine is very aged and oxidized with musky cellar aromas, medicine closet, nail polish and iodine. This is a fascinating look back in time, but alas, the wine has faded.
