The 2017 Cavaliere is a pure expression of Sangiovese from the Tuscan Coast. It is born in an area not often associated with this native Tuscan grape, and this wine has always enjoyed a high profile as a result. The Cavaliere opens to a dark and rich appearance that gives it an almost full-bodied appeal. The bouquet is worth an extra sniff, as it doesn't show the classic aromas you might associate with Sangiovese, especially if your expectations are calibrated to Brunello or Chianti Classico. This is a warm-climate (and hot-vintage) expression with black fruit, prune and scorched earth. The aromas are enhanced by a very bright note that reminds me of candied mint or spearmint. The wine ends on an astringent note, with dry oak tannins or perhaps fruit tannins from very concentrated fruit.
