The 2004 Cavaliere is 100% Sangiovese, a variety that is much less common in Maremma than it is in the rest of Tuscany, largely because, in general, the warm conditions aren’t as ideal for the grape. This is a big, rich, expansive wine that blossoms on the palate with sweet tobacco, earthiness, red cherries and underbrush. The warmth of Maremma is felt in the wine’s sheer volume but the flavor profile is all Sangiovese. A long, sublime finish rounds out the Cavaliere in style. This is another compelling wine from Michele Satta. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
