The 2003 Barolo Prapo is sweeter and riper than the Cerretta, but also slightly more advanced in its aromas and flavors. It is a soft-textured Barolo packed with dark fruit, menthol and licorice notes that flow from the glass. Although it offers notable concentration, its balance is ultimately dominated by the hard tannins that are typical of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
This small, family-run estate in Serralunga continues to demonstrate promise under the direction of proprietor Sergio Germano. These 2003 Barolos are both solid efforts. The wines closed down pretty dramatically in the glass and they are both likely to require a few years of cellaring prior to offering their best drinking.
