Icardi’s 2001 Barolo Parej has developed beautifully. This is such a flashy, overt wine when it is young that it is hard to predict how it will age. The 2001 has put on quite a bit of weight in bottle. Dark cherries, flowers, French oak, mint, mocha, and spices are some of the many notes that jump from the glass as the Parej shows off its inimitable personality. This is a great showing from the Parej, which year after year is one of the most unique wines from Barolo. Icardi’s 2001 Barolo Parej is a big, muscular effort. It presents aromas of earthiness, minerals and herbs on the nose along with excellent concentration and fleshiness in its very ripe red fruit. The advancing color suggests it won’t be especially long-lived although it has enough stuffing and underlying structure to drink well for another decade.
