The 2016 Orvieto Classico Superiore Campo del Guardiano is another extremely territory-driven wine by Palazzone. The blend of traditional grapes used here is 50% Procanico, 30% Grechetto and a 20% part of Verdello, Drupeggio and Malvasia. Interestingly, the last phase of winemaking sees this wine stacked and aged horizontally in a tufo-stone grotto for 18 months. That extra bottle time allows the wine to flesh out and show more generous tones of orchard fruit and Golden Delicious apple. Pretty saffron or cumin highlights also appear. Production is 8,000 bottles, and this wine should be able to withstand some near or medium-term aging.
