The 2001 Orvieto Classico Campo del Guardiano is, as usual, the undisputed champion of its appellation. Long, rich, honeyed, and mineral, its intensity and continuity and its almost tropical pear and pineapple flavors put it in another category compared to the competition. Though already delicious, it is a wine which can easily last four or five years if properly cellared.
Giovanni Dubini is incontestably the number one producer of Orvieto, to the point where even his consultant, Riccardo Cotarella, willingly admits that he has no idea of how he achieves, year after year, such high quality wines from grapes which other houses simply struggle with.
