The 2009 Gigondas Romane Machotte (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah aged in small oak) exhibits a dense ruby/purple hue along with notes of black pepper, soy sauce, sweet cherries, garrigue and lavender. Rich and fleshy, with a solid core of blackberry, steeped black currant and roasted plum fruit. A dark anise note provides underlying grip through the roasted chestnut–tinged finish. Very solid.
