The 2000 Barolo Bricco Boschis Riserva San Giuseppe is big and rich on the palate, but lacks freshness. Despite its attractive, textured personality; the wine appears out of balance, as the aromatics are maturing at a faster pace than the tannins are softening. Sweet menthol, licorice and worn-in leather linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018.
Cavallotto is another of Piedmont’s under the radar producers. I am typically a big fan of the Riservas – the entire lineup, actually – but the 2000s can’t match the best wines that have emerged from these cellars in recent vintages.
