The 2005 Barolo Ginestra shows all of the hallmarks of this Piedmontese grand cru vineyard; namely intense color, dark fruit, spices, menthol, leather, all underpinned by firm yet elegant tannins. The Ginestra is naturally fresher and more structured than the Barolo, and it will require a few years of patience. In 2005 the Ginestra is remarkably complete and compelling juice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
There is a purity to proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s wines that I find incredibly appealing. These three Barolos are essentially different selections, all from the Ginestra vineyard in Monforte. Fermentation takes place using the traditional submerged cap method, after which the Barolos are aged in large, neutral French oak barrels, an approach that works beautifully with the intensely spiced and aromatic Ginestra fruit.
