The 2008 Faithful Hound is a blend of 43% Cabernet, 32% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Franc and has a ripe, pastille-like nose with blackberry and fresh plums mixed with a hint of dates. The palate is very ripe and sweet with a fleshy texture and a sappy, licorice-tinged finish. Drink now-2017. Mulderbosch is one of Stellenbosch's most famous names. Founded in 1989 by physician Larry Jacobs who resurrected an old fruit farm, the 48-hectare estate (26-hectares under vine) soon became renowned for their Sauvignon Blanc. Young Mike Dubrovic was recruited as head winemaker, though he departed in 2009 to be replaced by Richard Kershaw for both Mulderbosch and their sister winery, Kanu. I must confess, I was hoping for more, especially with respect to the Sauvignon Blanc that was surpassed by its peers.Importer: Cape Classics, New York, NY; tel. (212) 686-1300
