The 1993 Evenstad Reserve reveals a medium ruby color, and a Burgundian-like, earthy, spicy, herb, and black-cherry-scented nose that jumps from the glass. The wine offers plenty of sweet, ripe fruit, good acidity, and moderate tannin in the finish. Although it is 6-12 months away from prime time drinking, this beautifully pure Pinot Noir is already aromatically complex, long, and rich. Inserted in a blind tasting of top Burgundies, it would be hard to pick it out as an Oregon Pinot Noir. Cellar it until early 1996 and drink it over the following 4-5 years. This is an impressive, well-made, Burgundian smelling and tasting example of Oregon Pinot Noir.
This high quality, relatively new Oregon winery bottles its wines without fining or filtration. In the case of the limited production Carter Vineyard, the wine is bottled directly from barrel without racking to the tank.
