The 1989 Barolo Ornato reveals hints of toasty vanillin from new oak casks, a huge, ripe bouquet of tar and spicy fruit, generous, full-bodied, highly extracted flavors, adequate acidity, and plenty of tannin in the long, rich finish. Although made in a more international style, it is a superb example of a modern-styled Barolo.
It has been twenty plus years since this estate has produced Barolos of such stature. Pio Cesare has turned out two full-bodied, concentrated, deeply flavored wines that should age for up to two decades. Because of the abundant sweet fruit and ripe tannin in 1989 and 1990, the wines can be approached when released. How delighted I am to see Pio Cesare turn out Barbarescos and Barolos of such high quality!
