The two finest wines from Evesham Woods in 1994 are the 1994 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill and its signature cuvee, the 1994 Pinot Noir Cuvee J. Both wines were bottled unfiltered. The Cuvee J may take decadence and opulence in Pinot Noir to a new limit. This is usually one of Oregon's most dazzling Pinot Noirs, thus it should come as no surprise that the 1994 is a winner. The wine admirably combines exceptional purity, richness, opulence, and power with a sense of grace, elegance, and finesse. As Russ Raney's homage to the great Burgundian winemaker, Henri Jayer, Jayer would no doubt be pleased. The wine offers a sweet, rich, expansive mid-section, an element of what the French call sur-maturitie (over-ripeness), as well as marvelous structure, balance, and intensity. Although young, it is already expressionistic and impressive. It should hit its peak in 1-2 years and last for a decade.
