Evesham Wood's Pinot Noir Cuvee J (the owner's homage to the great Burgundian winemaker, Henri Jayer) is usually one of the top three or four Pinots produced in Oregon. The 1992 has more competition because of the terrific quality of the 1992 Oregon Pinot vintage, but it is still one of that state's most ostentatious Pinots. Lamentably, the limited quantities produced mean the wine rarely gets beyond the grasp of Pinot enthusiasts in the Pacific Northwest. The wine exhibits a healthy dark ruby color, a beautiful, sweet bouquet of jammy red and black fruits, gently touched by sweet, toasty, smoky new oak, layers of ripe fruit, medium body, and outstanding richness that never becomes heavy or ponderous. This is an authoritatively flavored yet elegant wine that has just begun to open up and develop. It should drink well for at least 6-7 years.
