The son of this family has taken over, and has totally revamped the winemaking style. There is now a 3-5 day cold maceration, indigenous yeasts are employed during fermentation, and new oak casks are used. The excellent 1997 St.-Joseph La Sensonne (from a hillside vineyard behind the village of Mauves) is a more modern-styled wine than was produced in the past. Yields were a meager 24 hectoliters per hectare. Terrific fruit intensity consisting of blackberries and cherries is followed by a wine with licorice, flint, and smoke, medium to full body, fine purity, and a long, fleshy finish. This gutsy, exuberantly-styled St.-Joseph should drink well for 7-8 years.
