The red blend 2015 Les Comes d'Orto is always 50% Garnacha with 45% Cari?ena and 5% Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) from vines ranging from 20 to 90 years of age. The vineyards are located in three small valleys, or "comes," from the village of El Masroig. As with all the top reds, it fermented in open-top 500-liter oak barrels with some 28 days maceration, then pressed and transferred to barrique for 12 months. Tasting two 2015s next to two 2016s you immediately notice the difference in the character of the vintages, with the 2016s being lighter and fresher and with a bit more concentration and ripeness than the 2015s. This has quite a bit of the rusticity and earthiness of Cari?ena, with notes of tree bark and dust, and a medium-bodied palate with some grainy tannins. Better with food. 3,100 bottles and 36 magnums were filled in March 2017.
