The 2010 Les Comes d’Orto is a blend of 50% Garnacha, 45% Samso and 5% Ull de Llebre from 37- to 70-year-old vines grown on calcareous soils. It is aged in three-year-old French oak for 12 months. It has an understated, sensual bouquet that is beautifully defined and very pure, almost Burgundy-like in fruit profile. The palate is medium-bodied, with chalky tannins, crisp acidity and lively blackberry and raspberry fruit tinged with soy and dried herbs. Very harmonious, it has good weight on the mulberry-infused finish, with a hint of dark chocolate loitering after the wine has been ejected. This is top-notch Montsant red. Drink 2013-2020.
I had never heard of Orto Vins before I tasted through their range. I was impressed by both the consistency and by their pursuit of single varietal bottlings that might come at a price, but satisfy the curiosity of those who enjoy foraging for lesser known grapes. I thought their wines were extremely well-made and packaged.
