In issue 87 I reported my disappointment with Leonetti Cellars' 1991 Merlot. However, in two tastings since then the intense herbaceousness and vegetal quality has become more subdued. In fact, in August, the wine was displaying more of a chocolatey, berry, smoky character than the herbaceousness it exhibited when first released. The wine is powerful and rich, with super ripeness and sweetness. While not of the stature of some previous Leonetti Merlots, it is a fine wine for drinking over the next 5-6 years.
