Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 1988 La Romanée Grand Cru, an estate bottling, had a deep colour with thin bricking on the rim. The nose is pretty with raspberry and wild strawberry scents, a touch of cedar and sous-bois, a touch of orange blossom after five minutes aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, supple tannin and well-judged acidity. This is quite a suave La Romanée, youthful compared to similar aged vintages, spicy and saline with a gentle grip on the finish. This is a stylish wine that might lack a little finesse but has good presence. I can see this repaying more time in the cellar. Tasted June 2015.
