Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 1949 La Romanée Grand Cru was bottled by "C. Marey & Cte Liger-Belair" in Belgium (like the 1947 showed at the same tasting.) It has a deep color, deeper than the La Romanées of a similar age. It has burly and powerful nose at first, calming down with dark berry fruit, dried fig and even a touch of Christmas cake, then with continued aeration, there is a tang of chlorophyll. The palate is medium-bodied with presence, if not the tension one often finds with the 1949s. It has a soft texture and pleasant edginess, but like the 1947 there is little sense of animation. Still, there are pleasant black tea and truffle notes on the aftertaste - an enjoyable ancient La Romanée if not the profound experience that it might have been. Tasted June 2015.
