The 2005 Barolo Riva possesses striking aromatics that meld into in an expressive core of sweet red fruit. Subtle notes of smoke, tar and new leather linger on the long finish. This mid-weight Barolo offers lovely balance in an understated, feminine style for this producer. The Riva shows hints of volatile acidity that some tasters might find objectionable, but the wine’s overall balance compensates to a large extent. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. Claudio Alario’s 2005 Barolos are gorgeous; in fact they may very well be the finest Barolos he has ever made. In 2005 Alario harvested earlier than normal and his wines possess an extra degree of freshness that is quite appealing.
