Alario, based in Diano d’Alba, is perhaps best known for his Dolcettos but he also releases a lovely Barolo from his holdings in Verduno. The 2001 Barolo Riva is made in a very forward style, showing notes of toasted oak, vanilla, licorice, minerals and chocolate, with plenty of sweet red fruit and a soft, approachable personality.
