The 2003 Barolo Giachini is one of the highlights of this set of new releases. It, too, is sweet and long on the palate, where it reveals notable detail as well as depth in its perfumed dark cherries, spices, flowers and menthol. It offers lovely definition and terrific freshness for the vintage. Made in a larger-scaled style, it will likely require another year or two of cellaring prior to offering its best drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015.
Federico Grasso is a small artisan grower based in La Morra. The estate’s Barolos are among my favorite wines for near-term drinking in most vintages. However, these 2003s show an uneven level of quality which is typical of the vintage.
