Tasted at the Latour-à-Pomerol vertical in London. The 1966 Latour-à-Pomerol was not a great success for the estate, given the quality of Petrus or Trotanoy in this growing season. It has a perplexing, rather strange nose with strong seaweed notes and too much volatility. The palate is medium-bodied and again, there is some volatility, although here it almost works with the kirsch and black cherry notes. It is a feral, unrefined Pomerol that stumbles over the finishing line. Interesting more than pleasurable. This is easily surpassed by the 1962, 1964 and 1971. Tasted December 2015.

The 1966 is an atypically ripe, rich, dense wine that, in style, seems an anomaly in this vintage that produced lean, elegant, restrained wines. Still quite dark in color with an orange rim, the wine has a bouquet of ripe, deep fruit and oak, as well as a tarry, truffle-scented aroma. Powerful, full bodied, and rich, this wine should be drunk up. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 4/81.
