Starts with black cherries, violets and bark, followed by a hint of crushed rock. Medium-bodied with stringent tannins. Still tight and a little lean now, this needs more time to soften. Better after 2025.

A dense, slightly rustic red, with burly tannins dominating plum, cherry, tamarind paste, earth and iron flavors. Manages to show fruit under those broad shoulders and isn't overly astringent, so give this a few years to integrate (or decant now). This Brunello shows a medium-thick garnet appearance and aromas that feel faded by time. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is dark in character with black fruit and dried rose. I did not get much pleasure from the very dry tannins on this. 50,000 bottles were released.

A mix of plum, fruit cake, earth, leather and tobacco mark this savory, firmly-structured red, which tips toward the dense tannins in the end, yet remains focused and long. The Mocali 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a little harder to read compared to many of the wines in this report. It shows a savory quality with worn leather and cured meat that could well be a product of the very hot and dry growing season. The wine is lean on the palate, with more primary fruit flavors and fresh acidity to make for a neat and snappy close. Production is an ample 50,000 bottles.
