Mocali’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is a refined, elegant effort with layers of vibrant, plump cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol, underbrush and minerals. Though medium in body it shows excellent concentration and juiciness on the palate, with notable length, fine tannins and a long finish. With some air it put on considerable weight and I preferred its overall balance to that of the single-vineyard Raunate. A few years of bottle age will help smooth the youthful tannins, but this Brunello is pretty tasty right now. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2019.
