The 2004 Les Eres Vinya Velles is considerably more impressive. It is composed of 55% old-vine Carinena, 30% old-vine Garnacha, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was barrel fermented and aged for 18 months in new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a splendid nose of minerals, scorched earth, mushroom, truffle, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Youthful on the palate, it offers layers of fruit, ripe tannin, and outstanding balance. A bit rustically styled now, several years of bottle age should civilize this wine and it should drink well through 2022.
