Tement’s 2004 Sauvignon Blanc Grassnitzberg did time in different sizes of barrel, but mostly larger and none new. Gooseberry, resinous herbs, grapefruit and orange zest inform the nose. As has been the case in several recent vintages, I find this wine comes close to achieving a golden mean in its dialogue between fruit and wood. The palate is strong on Sauvignon fruit character and acid-retention – sweet green herbs and citrus prominently, pungently and juicily displayed – but also exhibits an alluring creaminess and impressive surface polish and a substantial finish.
