Tement’s 2004 Gewurztraminer is in fact from Gelber Traminer, from old vines in a parcel of Zieregg that he just acquired from the Carmelites. (Next year there will be young Sauvignon vines in this spot.) From cask, this offered a lovely nose of pear nectar, cardamom and lily. The palate is silken-textured and satisfyingly juicy, finishing with imposing spiced pear and sweet florals. It’s misleading to label this wine from such a distinctive variety as “Gewurztraminer,” but Austrian law does not recognize the Gelber Traminer.
