The 2007 Coniale, the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon, is, oddly enough, a more accessible wine than the Merlot. Sweet, silky tannins support a core of expressive red fruit, flowers and spices. This is a pretty, understated wine that makes up for some lack of varietal typicity with its terrific balance and undeniably attractive personality. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
Castellare is one of those properties that never seems to get the attention it deserves, despite boasting a track record of superb quality that goes back several decades. That works to the consumer’s advantage, as prices have remained quite reasonable, especially for the flagship I Sodi di San Niccolo.
