This is an impressive debut effort. The 1998 Vall Llach (800 cases produced) is a blend of 50% Carignan (from 80-year old vines) and 50% Merlot (5-10-year old vines), aged one year in new French oak. It is an impressive, powerful (15.1% alcohol) wine revealing a deep purple color in addition to a sweet nose of black raspberries, cherry liqueur, and graphite aromas. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, with moderately high tannin, superb purity, and a Bordeaux-like structure to its flavors and finish, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring, and age well for two decades.Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel.
