The star of the show is unquestionably the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Vieilles Vignes. Made from 75% Grenache, 17% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre that spent 17 months in barrels, it offers up stunning black raspberry, toasted bread, dried soil, Asian spice and licorice to go with a medium to full-bodied, voluptuously textured feel on the palate. You can still see hints of the oak élevage here, but it’s nicely integrated and I’ve no doubt it will be completely soaked up by the fruit in another year or two. It should drink nicely through 2024.
