The stunning 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Vieilles Vignes is a worthy successor to the extraordinary 1998 (which gets better every time I taste it). The dense ruby/purple-colored 2000, which I have seen with both a wax and tin capsule, possesses a gorgeously sweet nose of black cherry liqueur, cassis, mint, underbrush, and pepper. Unctuously-textured and extremely full-bodied, with high tannin, great purity, and admirable sweetness, this is a terrific classic Chateauneuf from one of the appellation's up-and-coming young stars. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016.
