The 2002 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (100% Prugnolo Gentile), a translucent red, is a remarkable wine for the vintage. It exhibits a gorgeous nose and expressive notes of dried flowers, spices and red fruit, with a sweet, open personality and no hard edges. The structure is clearly that of a modest vintage, but this wine shows terrific balance in that context. Still fresh, it should drink well for another seven to eight years, if not longer. To achieve this level of quality the estate performed a saignee which reduced the volume by 15%. The wine saw a shorter period of wood aging than normal, and the percentage of new French oak was reduced in favor of larger casks. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2012.
