The 1999 premier cru Volnay courtesy of Michel Lafarge is a beautiful Pinot Noir. Slightly paler in color compared to other 1999 Burgundies, it has an ethereal bouquet that is utterly entrancing: fleeting hints of peppermint, Morello cherries and plum, the summer warmth seeping through. The palate is medium-bodied with an appealing fleshy entry, nicely judged acidity and an elegant finish that does not short change you on flavor. This feels as if it is peaking now, but I suspect it will continue giving pleasure over the next decade. Drink now-2024. Tasted January 2014.
