When the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains was tasted for this report in mid-January, 2003, it was still resting on its original lees as it had never been racked. “When the lees were healthy, it was important to allow the 2001s to feed on them as long as possible,” explained Ambroise. Its sweet black fruit-scented nose leads to a big, rich, velvety-textured personality of outstanding depth. Layers of blackberries, cassis, and black cherries are found throughout its impressive core as well as in its persistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2011.
