The Nuits St.-Georges Les Vaucrains is a highly extracted, blockbuster, lumbering powerhouse that requires 5-8 years of patience. It is deep ruby/purple-colored, with a tight but promising nose, and medium to full-bodied, highly extracted, muscular personality that bulldozes its way across the palate. The wine exhibits a black fruit character intertwined with scents of earth, licorice, and truffles. Full, rich, and structured, it is a candidate for 20-25 years of aging potential. Ambroise, to no one's surprise, has produced monster 1993s that are black-colored, with massive tannin levels, and, in the finest examples, tremendous levels of fruit. As usual, it will be a question of which survives the longest - the fruit or the tannin? At least Ambroise was able to pack his finest wines with plenty of concentrated fruit.
