Ambroise's 1990s are the best wines he has yet produced. Moreover, he is finally throwing out his filters, putting in the bottle exactly what was tasted from the barrel.
While the Nuits St.-Georges-Les Vaucrains is similarly styled to the 1990 Nuits St.-Georges-Rue de Chaux, the color is nearly black, and the wine is massively concentrated and exceptionally backward. Although cleanly made, it is a throwback to the old style, heavy duty, super-concentrated, formidable red burgundies that have not existed since 1959. Cellar this blockbuster wine for 5-6 years; it should last for two decades or more . How many times over the last decade have I been able to say that about red burgundy?
