The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a medium ruby color, an attractive, evolved nose of roasted herbs, spice box, black cherries, currants, and a hint of resiny pine forest. In the mouth there is lovely fruit, some hints of saddle leather, pepper, and garrigue. It is best drunk over the next 6-7 years.
This historic estate now has a third cuvee, the Reserve, which takes advantage of some of the best locations of Syrah in all of Chateauneuf du Pape. The blend is heavily weighted toward Syrah, with the balance Grenache, and based on these two vintages, it is a dramatically superior wine, despite the fact that I rarely find Chateauneuf du Pape dominated by Syrah to be their strongest suit. It just proves it is always best to keep an open mind about these things.
