The 1993 is excellent. Supple and round, with plenty of black fruits intermingled with scents of Provencal herbs, smoke, and earth, it is a medium to full-bodied wine with fine concentration and ripeness, a smooth-as-silk personality, and a long, heady, alcoholic finish. Drink it over the next 7-9 years. While the quality of the wines deteriorated in the eighties, things are now beginning to change for the better. I am delighted to report that Baron Leroy's son, Bruno, assumed responsibility for looking after the 1993 vintage, and, with the help of the well-known oenologist, Jean-Luc Colombo, vinified the 1994. The 1993 is unquestionably the finest wine made at Chateau Fortia since the 1981, and the 1994 is the first potentially outstanding Chateau Fortia since the great 1978. This domaine is unusual in that it has a high percentage of Syrah planted. In 1994, the Syrah ripened extremely early, allowing it to be harvested before any rain arrived. That fact obviously accounts for the outstanding success of the 1994 Fortia, a wine produced from a blend of 40% Syrah and the rest primarily Grenache.Importer: none at present.
